What is McNemar’s test?
McNemar’s test checks whether a paired yes/no outcome changes between two occasions, such as before and after an intervention, using only the pairs that changed.
When to use McNemar’s test
Use it for a binary outcome measured twice on the same people, or on matched pairs.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the values. Fill in yes before, yes after, yes before, no after, no before, yes after, no before and no after.
- Read the results. Results update automatically. Read the plain-English interpretation, then use Copy table to paste APA-style tables into Word and Copy for the results sentence.
Frequently asked questions
When is McNemar’s test used?
For a binary outcome measured twice on the same people, or on matched case-control pairs.
Which version should I report?
Use the exact binomial p-value when there are fewer than about 25 discordant pairs; otherwise the continuity-corrected chi-square is common.
Why are only discordant pairs used?
Pairs that answered the same both times carry no information about change.
