Interpretation
The 4-item scale has good internal consistency (α = .838). No item would raise alpha if removed.

What is Cronbach’s alpha?
Cronbach’s alpha measures the internal consistency of a multi-item scale: how closely the items measure the same construct. Item statistics show which items lower reliability.
When to use Cronbach’s alpha
Use it for any multi-item scale before computing a total or mean score. Values of .70 or more are commonly acceptable, and values above .95 may indicate redundant items.
Assumptions
- All items measure one construct (check with factor analysis).
- Reverse-worded items are recoded before analysis.
How to use this tool
- Enter your data. Paste columns from Excel, Google Sheets or SPSS with variable names in the first row, or upload a CSV or Excel file. The example data shows the expected layout.
- Choose the variables. Select the scale items.
- Read the results. Results update automatically. Read the plain-English interpretation, then use Copy table to paste APA-style tables into Word and Copy for the results sentence.
How to report Cronbach’s alpha in APA style
“The trust scale was reliable, α = .86.”
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Cronbach’s alpha?
Values of .70 or higher are usually acceptable, .80 good and .90 excellent. Values above .95 may mean some items are redundant.
What is “alpha if item deleted”?
The alpha the scale would have without that item. If it is higher than the current alpha, the item may not fit the scale.
Do I need to reverse-code items first?
Yes. Negatively worded items must be reverse-coded before calculating alpha, or alpha will be too low.
