Interpretation

All constructs meet the thresholds for composite reliability and convergent validity.

Trust: CR = .88, AVE = .65; Satisfaction: CR = .86, AVE = .61; Loyalty: CR = .90, AVE = .75.

What is composite reliability and AVE?

Composite reliability and average variance extracted summarise how well a construct’s indicators measure it. Paste the standardized loadings from AMOS, lavaan, SmartPLS or a published paper to calculate both, and add construct correlations to test discriminant validity.

When to use composite reliability and AVE

Use it when you have standardized loadings but not the raw data, for example to check values reported in a paper or exported from AMOS.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the variables. Select the standardized loadings (one construct per line) and construct correlations (optional).
  2. Read the results. Results update automatically. Read the plain-English interpretation, then use Copy table to paste APA-style tables into Word and Copy for the results sentence.

How to report composite reliability and AVE in APA style

Report CR and AVE for each construct alongside Cronbach’s alpha.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for composite reliability?

CR = (Σλ)² / [(Σλ)² + Σ(1 − λ²)], where λ are the standardized loadings of the construct’s indicators.

What is the formula for AVE?

AVE = Σλ² / k, the mean of the squared standardized loadings, where k is the number of indicators.

Can CR be high while AVE is low?

Yes. Many moderately loading items can give acceptable CR with AVE below .50, which signals weak convergent validity.
