How to read the chi-square table

  1. Work out the degrees of freedom. Test of independence: df = (rows − 1) × (columns − 1). Goodness of fit: df = categories − 1.
  2. Choose α. The column headings are right-tail probabilities. For the usual test at the 5% level, use the 0.05 column.
  3. Compare. If your χ² statistic is larger than the table value, reject the null hypothesis.

Worked example

A 3 × 3 table of education level by preferred news source gives χ² = 11.4. Then df = (3 − 1)(3 − 1) = 4, and the critical value at α = .05 is 9.488. Because 11.4 > 9.488, the variables are associated, p < .05 (exact p = .022).

What are the left-hand columns for?

Columns such as 0.995 and 0.975 give the lower tail of the distribution. They are used for confidence intervals for a variance and for two-sided tests of a single variance, not for the usual test of independence.

χ² = Σ (O − E)² / E

Frequently asked questions

What is the critical chi-square value at 0.05 with 1 degree of freedom?

3.841. With 2 df it is 5.991, with 3 df 7.815 and with 4 df 9.488.

How do I find degrees of freedom for a chi-square test?

For a test of independence on an r × c table, df = (r − 1)(c − 1). For a goodness-of-fit test with k categories, df = k − 1, minus one more for each parameter estimated from the data.

Is the chi-square test one-tailed or two-tailed?

The usual chi-square test is right-tailed: large values of χ² indicate a poor fit to the null hypothesis, so only the upper tail is used even though the alternative is non-directional.

What if expected counts are small?

If more than 20% of expected counts are below 5, or any is below 1, the chi-square approximation is unreliable. Use Fisher's exact test for 2 × 2 tables or combine categories.

What effect size should I report with chi-square?

Report phi (φ) for 2 × 2 tables or Cramér's V for larger tables. The free chi-square calculator reports both, with expected counts and an APA sentence.
