What is a one-sample t-test?
The one-sample t-test compares the mean of one sample with a known or hypothesized value, such as a scale midpoint, a population norm or a target. Paste your data, set the test value and get the full result with an effect size.
When to use a one-sample t-test
Use it to test whether a sample mean differs from a specific number, such as the midpoint 3 of a five-point scale.
Assumptions
- The variable is continuous.
- Observations are independent.
- The variable is roughly normal, or n is above about 30.
How to use this tool
- Enter your data. Paste columns from Excel, Google Sheets or SPSS with variable names in the first row, or upload a CSV or Excel file. The example data shows the expected layout.
- Choose the variables. Select the variable.
- Set the options. Fill in test value (μ₀).
- Read the results. Results update automatically. Read the plain-English interpretation, then use Copy table to paste APA-style tables into Word and Copy for the results sentence.
How to report a one-sample t-test in APA style
“Exam scores (M = 63.4, SD = 9.8) were significantly above 60, t(89) = 3.29, p = .001, d = 0.35.”
Frequently asked questions
When should I use a one-sample t-test?
Use it when you have one group and want to know whether its mean differs from a specific value, for example whether average satisfaction differs from the neutral midpoint of 3.
What is the formula?
t = (M − μ₀) / (SD / √n), with n − 1 degrees of freedom.
What if my data are not normal?
With about 30 or more cases the test is robust. For small, skewed samples use a one-sample Wilcoxon signed-rank test instead.
