PLS-SEM Course: From Research Model to Publication

Learn partial least squares structural equation modeling the way reviewers expect it: from specifying a research model to assessing reliability and validity, testing hypotheses with bootstrapping, analysing mediation, moderation and group differences, and reporting everything in a publishable format. All in PLS-SEM Studio, free in your browser.

What you will learn

  • Decide when PLS-SEM is the right method, and justify it to reviewers
  • Specify reflective and formative constructs and a structural model with hypotheses
  • Estimate the model with bootstrapping and the recommended settings
  • Assess indicator loadings, Cronbach’s alpha, ρA, composite reliability and AVE
  • Establish discriminant validity with HTMT and its confidence intervals, and check common method bias
  • Evaluate the structural model: collinearity, path coefficients, f², R², Q² and SRMR
  • Test mediation, moderation and moderated mediation, compare groups with MGA and MICOM, and prioritise with IPMA
  • Report PLS-SEM results in the format journals expect

Who this course is for

Master’s and PhD students, researchers and lecturers in management, marketing, information systems, tourism, education and other social sciences who test models with latent constructs measured by survey items. You should know what a correlation and a regression coefficient are; Course 1 covers that if you need a refresher. No SmartPLS licence or other software is needed.

How the course works

Each lesson explains one step of the method in plain language and then sends you to a free tool on this site with the data already loaded, so you practise on a real analysis as you read. A short quiz at the end of every lesson checks your understanding. Create a free student account to save your progress on every device. After the last lesson, pass the final assessment with 70% or more to earn a certificate of completion that you can download as a PDF at any time and that anyone can verify online. There are no fees, no deadlines and nothing to install.

Syllabus

  1. 1What PLS-SEM is and when to use itUnderstand latent constructs, measurement and structural models, the difference between PLS-SEM and CB-SEM, and minimum sample sizes.15 min
  2. 2Build your research modelPrepare the data, define constructs and items, draw the structural paths, and formulate hypotheses, moderation and mediation.15 min
  3. 3Run the PLS algorithm and bootstrappingUnderstand how PLS estimates the model, why bootstrapping is needed for significance, and which settings to choose and report.15 min
  4. 4Assess reliability and convergent validityEvaluate indicator loadings, indicator collinearity, Cronbach’s alpha, ρA, composite reliability and AVE, and decide what to do with weak items.20 min
  5. 5Discriminant validity and common method biasEstablish discriminant validity with HTMT and its bootstrap confidence intervals, understand Fornell–Larcker and cross-loadings, and check for common method bias.20 min
  6. 6Assess the structural model and test hypothesesCheck collinearity, test path coefficients with bootstrap confidence intervals, and evaluate f², R², Q², PLSpredict and model fit.20 min
  7. 7Mediation, moderation and moderated mediationTest indirect effects with bootstrapping, classify mediation types, interpret an interaction with simple slopes, and test moderated mediation.20 min
  8. 8Advanced analyses: MGA, IPMA and NCACompare groups with multi-group analysis after MICOM, turn results into priorities with importance-performance maps, and test necessity with NCA.20 min
  9. 9Report PLS-SEM results for publicationStructure the results section, build the standard tables and figure, export from the Studio and avoid the mistakes reviewers flag most often.15 min

Frequently asked questions

Do I need SmartPLS?

No. PLS-SEM Studio implements the PLS-SEM algorithm, bootstrapping, HTMT, PLSpredict, mediation, moderation and fsQCA in your browser, and the separate tools on this site add MGA with MICOM, IPMA, cIPMA and NCA. Results follow the same procedures as SmartPLS 4 and the R package SEMinR.

What data does the course use?

The Studio’s built-in sample study: 300 respondents answering 20 items on performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, trust, behavioural intention and use behaviour, a technology acceptance model in the UTAUT tradition. The MGA and IPMA lessons use the example data built into those tools.

Is PLS-SEM accepted by journals?

Yes, especially in marketing, management and information systems, provided you justify the choice and report the current assessment criteria. Lesson 1 explains when to choose PLS-SEM and when covariance-based SEM is the better option, and Lesson 9 lists what reviewers look for.

Can I use my own data?

Yes. After each lesson, repeat the step with your own data file. The Studio reads CSV and Excel files, and nothing is uploaded.

How do I get the certificate?

Complete all nine lessons and score at least 70% in the final assessment.
