Note. Error bars are 95% confidence intervals of the mean (t distribution).
Interpretation
Error bars show 95% confidence intervals. For a formal comparison of groups, run a t-test or ANOVA.

What is a bar graph with error bars?
A bar graph of means with error bars is the standard way to present group averages in reports and papers. This tool calculates each group’s mean and draws standard deviation, standard error or 95% confidence interval error bars, with optional clustered bars for a second grouping variable.
When to use a bar graph with error bars
Use a bar graph with error bars to present group means in a report or poster. State which error bar you used, because SD, SE and CI bars mean different things.
How to use this tool
- Enter your data. Paste columns from Excel, Google Sheets or SPSS with variable names in the first row, or upload a CSV or Excel file. The example data shows the expected layout.
- Choose the variables. Select the numeric variable, group and second grouping (clustered bars).
- Set the options. Fill in error bars.
- Read the results. Results update automatically. Read the plain-English interpretation, then use Copy table to paste APA-style tables into Word and Copy for the results sentence.
How to report a bar graph with error bars in APA style
Label the error bars in the figure caption, for example “Error bars represent 95% confidence intervals.”
Frequently asked questions
Should error bars show SD, SE or a 95% CI?
Use SD to show variability in the data, SE or a 95% CI to show the precision of the mean. Always say which you used.
Do overlapping error bars mean no significant difference?
Not necessarily. Overlapping 95% CIs can still correspond to a significant difference, so run a t-test or ANOVA.
How is the 95% confidence interval calculated?
Mean ± t(0.975, n − 1) × SD / √n.
