What is a scatter plot?

A scatter plot shows each case as a point defined by two numeric variables. It reveals the direction, form and strength of a relationship and any outliers, and the trend line summarises the linear relationship.

When to use a scatter plot

Use a scatter plot to check the form, direction and strength of a relationship between two numeric variables before computing a correlation or regression.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your data. Paste columns from Excel, Google Sheets or SPSS with variable names in the first row, or upload a CSV or Excel file. The example data shows the expected layout.
  2. Choose the variables. Select the x axis, y axis and colour by group (optional).
  3. Set the options. Fill in show trend line.
  4. Read the results. Results update automatically. Read the plain-English interpretation, then use Copy table to paste APA-style tables into Word and Copy for the results sentence.

How to report a scatter plot in APA style

Describe the pattern and report Pearson’s r (or Spearman’s ρ for monotonic, non-linear patterns).

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a trend line to a scatter plot?

Tick “Show trend line”; the tool fits a least-squares line and shows its equation and R².

What does R² mean on a scatter plot?

The proportion of variance in Y explained by the straight line, between 0 and 1.

Can I colour points by group?

Yes. Choose a grouping variable and each group gets its own colour and legend entry.
