Box Plot Maker (Box and Whisker Plot)

Draw box-and-whisker plots to compare distributions. Each box shows the interquartile range and median, whiskers reach 1.5 × IQR, and points beyond them are flagged as outliers in a table.

Note. Quartiles use linear interpolation (Excel QUARTILE.INC, R type 7). Outliers lie more than 1.5 × IQR beyond the quartiles (Tukey).

Interpretation

No outliers were found. The highest median is Post_Score (64.00).

What is a box plot?

A box plot summarises a distribution with five numbers: the minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile and maximum. It is the quickest way to compare groups and to spot skew and outliers, and this maker draws them for any number of variables or groups.

When to use a box plot

Use box plots to compare the centre, spread and skew of several groups or variables at a glance, and to spot outliers before running tests.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your data. Paste columns from Excel, Google Sheets or SPSS with variable names in the first row, or upload a CSV or Excel file. The example data shows the expected layout.
  2. Choose the variables. Select the variables and split by group (optional).
  3. Set the options. Fill in use one common axis.
  4. Read the results. Results update automatically. Read the plain-English interpretation, then use Copy table to paste APA-style tables into Word and Copy for the results sentence.

How to report a box plot in APA style

Describe the medians and IQRs; mention any outliers and how you handled them.

Frequently asked questions

How do you read a box plot?

The box spans the middle 50% of values (Q1 to Q3), the line inside is the median, the whiskers reach the most extreme values within 1.5 × IQR, and dots beyond them are outliers.

How are outliers defined in a box plot?

Values more than 1.5 times the interquartile range below Q1 or above Q3 (Tukey’s rule).

Which quartile method is used?

Linear interpolation, the same as Excel’s QUARTILE.INC and R’s default (type 7).
