What is a histogram?

A histogram groups a numeric variable into intervals (bins) and shows how many values fall in each. It reveals the shape of a distribution: whether it is symmetric, skewed, bimodal or contains outliers.

When to use a histogram

Use a histogram to see the shape of a continuous variable: its centre, spread, skew and any gaps or outliers. Try a few bin counts, because the shape can change with the bin width.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your data. Paste columns from Excel, Google Sheets or SPSS with variable names in the first row, or upload a CSV or Excel file. The example data shows the expected layout.
  2. Choose the variables. Select the variable.
  3. Set the options. Fill in number of bins and overlay a normal curve.
  4. Read the results. Results update automatically. Read the plain-English interpretation, then use Copy table to paste APA-style tables into Word and Copy for the results sentence.

How to report a histogram in APA style

Describe the shape (symmetric, skewed, bimodal) and report the mean and SD or median and IQR.

Frequently asked questions

How many bins should a histogram have?

A common starting point is Sturges’ rule, log₂(n) + 1 bins, which the tool uses by default. Try a few values to check that the shape is stable.

What is the difference between a histogram and a bar chart?

A histogram shows a continuous variable split into adjacent intervals, so the bars touch; a bar chart compares separate categories.

What does the normal curve show?

The normal distribution with the same mean and standard deviation as your data, scaled to the histogram, to help judge normality.
